Why convert mg to mL?

On a medicine box, the dose is expressed in milligrams (mg) — the amount of active ingredient. But for a syrup or suspension, you administer a volume in milliliters (mL) with a syringe or measuring cup. To bridge the two, you need the concentration: how many mg of active substance are dissolved in each mL of liquid.

This tool applies the standard pharmaceutical formula: volume (mL) = dose (mg) ÷ concentration (mg/mL). It works in reverse (volume → dose) and offers a third mode to compute a pediatric dose in mg/kg/intake.

Pharmaceutical formulas cheatsheet

mg → mL

Volume = Dose ÷ Concentration. Example: 250 mg of paracetamol at 100 mg/5 mL → 12.5 mL.

mL → mg

Dose = Volume × Concentration. Useful to check what a pre-filled syringe contains.

mg/kg → mL

Total dose = weight × unit posology, then divide by the concentration to obtain the volume.

Ratio (1:1000)

A 1:X ratio means 1 g per X mL, i.e. (1000/X) mg/mL. Epinephrine 1:1000 = 1 mg/mL.

The 5 golden rules before administration

  1. Right patient — check name, surname, date of birth.
  2. Right drug — confirm the active ingredient on the box.
  3. Right dose — cross-check the math with a colleague or a pharmacist.
  4. Right route — oral, IM, IV: never mix up presentations.
  5. Right time — respect the interval between two intakes.

This tool is an educational aid, it does not replace the medical prescription or the nursing double-check.

FAQ

Can I convert mg to mL without knowing the concentration?

No, it's impossible. mg is a mass unit (how much active substance) and mL a volume unit (the amount of liquid). To go from one to the other, you must know the medicine's concentration, written on the box or leaflet (e.g. 100 mg/5 mL).

How to read the concentration on a syrup bottle?

Look for a mention like "X mg / Y mL" or "X mg / dosing cup of Y mL". Common example: Doliprane 2.4% = 24 mg/mL. If you see "g/100 mL", multiply by 10 to get mg/mL.

How to convert µg (micrograms) to mg?

1 mg = 1,000 µg. To convert µg to mg, divide by 1,000. Example: a 500 µg dose equals 0.5 mg. Enter that value in mg in the tool to get the matching volume.

How do I compute a dose in IU (international units)?

IU don't convert directly to mg: each substance (insulin, vitamin D, heparin…) has its own conversion factor. Refer to the leaflet or pharmacopoeia for the IU ↔ mg ratio, then use the tool to switch to mL.
