How much kibble should a neutered cat eat?

Edited by Outilo Reviewed by Yoann Begue Last verified on 13/06/2026
Quick answer

A neutered cat often has lower energy needs than an intact cat. The right kibble amount mainly depends on weight, body condition, activity level and the calories shown on the pack.

Explanation

After neutering, many cats gain weight more easily, especially if they live indoors or are not very active. Free-feeding is not always ideal: it is usually better to calculate a daily portion, weigh it, then monitor weight evolution over several weeks.

The calculator lets you enter neutering status, body condition and the kibble energy value. It can also include wet food when mix-feeding, to avoid giving a full kibble portion on top of wet food.

Formula / method

Daily portion in g = neutered cat energy need ÷ kibble kcal/kg × 1000

Concrete example

A 4 kg neutered cat eating kibble at 4000 kcal/kg may have an indicative portion around 45 to 60 g per day depending on activity and body condition.

Common mistake

Permanent free-feeding can encourage weight gain in some neutered cats. A weighed daily portion is often more reliable, especially for indoor cats.
