Understanding your pet’s kibble portion

The right amount of kibble rarely depends on one number alone. Weight matters, but age, neutering, activity, body condition and the food’s energy value can significantly change the result. This calculator estimates your dog’s or cat’s daily energy need, then converts it into grams of kibble per day.

The goal is simple: get a practical portion for a healthy pet, avoid rough guesses and better understand how kibble choice affects your monthly budget.

An estimate adapted to your pet’s profile

A puppy, kitten, neutered adult, senior pet or very active companion does not have the same needs. The calculator adjusts the portion according to life stage, body condition and activity level. You can also enter the energy value shown on the pack, in kcal/kg or kcal/100 g.

The result remains a practical estimate. It should be adjusted with real observation: stable weight, appetite, general condition, stool quality, activity level and veterinary advice when needed.

Kibble only or mix-feeding

If you also feed wet food, the calculator can subtract the energy provided by wet food and recalculate the kibble amount to add. This helps avoid combining two full portions without noticing it.

Mix-feeding can help some pets improve hydration, especially cats, but it still needs to stay balanced. If wet food already covers most of the daily calories, the kibble portion should be reduced.

The result is a guidance estimate. In case of illness, pregnancy, lactation, major weight loss or weight gain, ask your veterinarian for advice.

FAQ

Which energy value should I enter in the calculator?

Enter the value shown on the kibble pack. It may be expressed in kcal/kg or kcal/100 g. If the label shows 380 kcal per 100 g, that equals 3800 kcal/kg.

Should I use my pet’s current weight or ideal weight?

For a pet with stable weight, use the current weight. In case of visible overweight or underweight, the result should be interpreted carefully. A veterinarian can help define a realistic target weight.

Why does the portion change after neutering?

After neutering, energy needs may decrease in many dogs and cats. Keeping the same portion can encourage weight gain. The calculator adjusts the estimate according to neutering status.

Can I mix kibble and wet food on the same day?

Yes. The key is to count the energy provided by both foods. If you add wet food without reducing kibble, the total ration can quickly become too high in calories.

How do I switch kibble safely?

Make a gradual transition over about 7 days: 75% old kibble / 25% new, then 50/50, then 25/75, before switching fully to the new food. Slow down if your pet has digestive issues.

Does this calculator replace a veterinarian?

No. It provides an estimate for a healthy dog or cat. In case of illness, pregnancy, lactation, medical diet or major weight variation, only a veterinarian can precisely adapt the ration.
